How to Remove a Snap On CPU Fan

Feb 13, 2025

Removing a snap on CPU fan is a task that may be necessary for cleaning, replacement, or upgrading purposes. Here is a step by step guide on how to do it safely and effectively.

First, make sure the computer is turned off and unplugged from the power source to avoid any electrical hazards. Open the computer case by removing the side panel. Locate the CPU fan, which is usually mounted on top of the CPU heatsink.

The snap on CPU fan is held in place by plastic clips. To remove the fan, start by identifying the clips. There are usually two or four clips, depending on the design of the fan. Look for small tabs or levers on the clips that can be used to release them.

Using your fingers or a small tool, such as a flat head screwdriver, gently lift or push the tabs on the clips. Be careful not to apply too much force, as this can break the clips. Once the tabs are released, the clips should be able to pivot or slide out of their locking positions.

After releasing all the clips, carefully lift the CPU fan straight up. You may notice that there is some thermal paste between the fan's heatsink and the CPU. This thermal paste helps with heat transfer, but it may also cause the fan to stick slightly to the CPU. Use a gentle twisting or rocking motion if needed to separate the fan from the heatsink.

Once the fan is removed, you can clean it by using compressed air to blow away any dust that has accumulated on the fan blades and the heatsink. If you are planning to replace the fan, make sure to purchase a compatible fan for your CPU.

When reinstalling the fan, apply a fresh layer of thermal paste to the CPU surface. Then, align the fan with the mounting points on the motherboard and carefully snap the clips back into place. Make sure the clips are securely locked to ensure proper contact between the heatsink and the CPU. Finally, reconnect the fan's power cable to the motherboard's fan header.

It's important to note that when handling the CPU and the fan, be gentle to avoid damaging these sensitive components. If you are unsure about any step of the process, it may be advisable to consult the computer's manual or seek professional help.
